Matanzas Runs Past Wolfson In Kickoff Classic Matchup
PALM COAST — Matanzas running back Shomarion Gaines set the tone on the first of the game when he scored on a 57-yard run on the game’s first play which was the first of 5 rushing touchdowns for the Pirates during their 42-22 win over Jacksonville Wolfson.
Gaines also added a 1-yard touchdown run at the 3:34 mark in the first quarter and Dakwon Evans had touchdown runs that covered 20 and 47 yards. Jordan Mills scored on a 70-yard run with 7:37 left in the third quarter that gave Matanzas a 36-22 lead.
Pirates kicker Landon Grover also contributed to the scoring with field goals that covered 36 and 27 yards.
Wolfson junior running back/defensive back Tyler Terry did all he could to keep the Wolfpack in the game. He returned an interception 76 yards for a score, had two rushing touchdowns, and scored on a 2-point conversion. His 12-yard touchdown run with 8:13 left in the third quarter cut the Matanzas lead to 29-22, but that was as close as Wolfson would get as the Pirates scored the game’s final 13 points.
Matanzas opens the 2021 regular season on the road at St. Augustine Menendez and Wolfson will play at Hilliard.
