Merritt Island Christian Crushes World Of Knowledge

MERRITT ISLAND — Merritt Island Christian senior running back Layson Handwork scored three rushing touchdowns to the lead the Cougars as the crushed first year program World of Knowledge 42-6 in an 8-Man Football game.

Handwork, the son of Head Coach Matt Handwork scored his first touchdown on a 13-yard run in the first quarter. He added another 8-yard score in the second quarter and he had a 19-yard score on the last play of third quarter.

Coach Handwork’s other son Bode Handwork, who is just an eighth grader, scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Judah Montecalvo which made the score 29-0 midway through the second quarter.

Morgan Babb led the defensive charge for Merritt Island Christian with two interceptions and returned one 48 yards for a score. Jackson McKinney also had an interception return for a touchdown.

The World of Knowledge Owls out of Holiday finally got on the scoreboard with 9:45 left in the game after Jordan Beeman scored on a 75-yard run.

The game was played with a running clock and 10 minute quarters during the second half due to the mercy rule and inclement weather approaching.

Next week Merritt Island Christian (4-0) will host Hope Christian (3-0) and World of Knowledge (0-2) will travel to Jacksonville Old Plank Christian (1-2).
